ABOUT THE PEOPLE WHO GROW IT: The coffee industry in Zambia virtually collapsed in the mid-2000s, due to economic and political pressures that made it difficult for growers to obtain long and short-term financing. Thankfully, in 2012, Olam Specialty Coffee International decided to invest up to $40 million to create a large coffee estate on 2,000 hectares of land that once grew coffee, but had not been worked for many years. A brand new crop of trees was planted, and best agricultural practices put into place, creating a sustainable production line. To Olam’s surprise and delight, the very first marketable crop achieved cupping scores above anyone’s expectations, due to ideal soil and climate conditions in Northern Province. Thousands of jobs have been created in that province due to this initiative. It is gratifying to see a multi-national company with a conscience, actively working to improve coffee quality and production, and improve the economic and social well-being of small farmers in developing countries.
In the case of Olam Zambia, they have an active social footprint with their estate housing and are supporting an 800 student school, a medical clinic, as well as ongoing work on an active outgrower program which they will be rolling out over the next 2-3 years.
This lot of coffee is a nice Zambia AAA/AA grade Rainforest Alliance certified coffee from two Olam owned and operated estates, Kateshi Estate and Isanya Estate located in the Mafinga Hills subregion of Zambia's Northern Province. Kateshi Estate is located near the town of Kasama and has over 6,000 acres, 2,000 of which are currently cultivated with coffee. Coffee grown on the estate is between 4,400 and 4,600 feet above sea level. Isanya Estate is comprised of 4,000 hectares at an altitude of over 5,000 feet. Coffee from both estates are milled at Kateshi and blended to create this unique offering.
