ABOUT THE PEOPLE WHO GROW IT: Climate and geography of eastern Democratic Republic of Congo are ideal for high quality coffee. Infrastructure and trade, however, have been in decline since the 1960s and were nearly destroyed in the years following the Rwandan genocide in 1994. Ongoing violence caused many farmers to flee, abandoning homes and coffee plantations. While instability remains, many farmers are rebuilding their lives through agriculture. Sound coffee production shows potential to provide farmers and communities with sustainable livelihoods. Cooperatives are starting to be established to further revitalize the industry and bring back a well-needed source of income to Congolese of North and South Kivu.
This fully washed organically-certified coffee comes from Tsheya and Minova villages in the Group of Buzi of the Kalehe Territory. La solidarité pour la Promotion des Actions Café et le Développement Intégral (SOPACDI) was established in 2003 with 286 members with the aim of boosting small coffee farmers' quality and quantity. 28% of the members are female and the cooperative has made positive impacts on the community's housing and public infrastructure. The cooperative has increased membership to over 5,300 members in 2014 and cultivates nearly 10,000 hectares.
